Strategic Collaboration as a Means of Mediation in Translating Culturally Ambiguous Text: A Case Study

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to explore the notion of mediation processes involved in strategic collaboration in translating culturally ambiguous texts. Data for analysis were gathered from on-line exchanges of opinions and comments accrued through the reciprocal translation processes between Korean and American translators. Analytic taxonomy to determine collaboration efforts was established and every exchange of transactions was analyzed in accordance with the taxonomy. The result of this study suggests that the translation of culturally ambiguous texts can be facilitated through highly mediated collaboration between two participants, one of whom is well versed in cultures of the source text (Korean) whereas the other partner is native speaker of the target text (English). Actual samples of transactions are presented with analysis on mediation and negotiation processes.

In this paper, we consider Barnes-type Daehee polynomials of the first kind and of the second kind. From the properties of Sheffer sequences of these polynomials arising from umbral calculus, we derive new and interesting identities.Comment: 34 page

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Escherichia coli </it>has been most widely used for the production of valuable recombinant proteins. However, over-production of heterologous proteins in <it>E. coli </it>frequently leads to their misfolding and aggregation yielding inclusion bodies. Previous attempts to refold the inclusion bodies into bioactive forms usually result in poor recovery and account for the major cost in industrial production of desired proteins from recombinant <it>E. coli</it>. Here, we describe the successful use of the immobilized folding machineries for <it>in vitro </it>refolding with the examples of high yield refolding of a ribonuclease A (RNase A) and cyclohexanone monooxygenase (CHMO).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We have generated refolding-facilitating media immobilized with three folding machineries, mini-chaperone (a monomeric apical domain consisting of residues 191–345 of GroEL) and two foldases (DsbA and human peptidyl-prolyl <it>cis-trans </it>isomerase) by mimicking oxidative refolding chromatography. For efficient and simple purification and immobilization simultaneously, folding machineries were fused with the positively-charged consecutive 10-arginine tag at their C-terminal. The immobilized folding machineries were fully functional when assayed in a batch mode. When the refolding-facilitating matrices were applied to the refolding of denatured and reduced RNase A and CHMO, both of which contain many cysteine and proline residues, RNase A and CHMO were recovered in 73% and 53% yield of soluble protein with full enzyme activity, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The refolding-facilitating media presented here could be a cost-efficient platform and should be applicable to refold a wide range of <it>E. coli </it>inclusion bodies in high yield with biological function.</p

Seismic response of beam-column joints rehabilitated with FRP sheets and buckling restrained braces

    Get PDF
An experimental test was performed to evaluate the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete beam-column joints rehabilitated with FRP sheets and Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs). Six beam-column joints were rehabilitated and tested. The test results were compared in terms of hysteresis loops, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation and ductility. The comparison result showed that wrapping FRP sheets can contribute to increase the effect of confinement and to delay crack development in the joints. Also retrofitting buckling restrained braces (BRBs) can improve the stiffness and energy dissipation capacity. Both FRP sheets and BRBs can effectively improve the strength, stiffness and ductility

Particulate counter electrode system for enhanced light harvesting in dye-sensitized solar cells

    Get PDF
A particulate counter electrode with photo scattering and redox catalytic properties is applied to dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in order to improve photo conversion efficiency and simplify the assembly process. Our particulate counter electrode acts as both a photo reflecting layer and a catalyst for reduction of electrolyte. The reflective and catalytic properties of the electrode are investigated through optical and electrochemical analysis, respectively. A short circuit current density enhancement is observed in the DSSCs without the need to add an additional reflecting layer to the electrode. This leads to a simplified assembly process. Demographic and Socioeconomic Influences on Sleep Patterns among Adolescent Students

    Get PDF
Although proper sleep is an important topic in adolescent health, little is known about the sleep patterns of adolescents from a longitudinal and non-Western perspective. To fill this gap, the present research conducted a longitudinal study of the impact of demographic and socioeconomic factors on sleep patterns among Korean adolescent students. The relationship could positively or negatively affect sleep. Therefore, it is important to understand which demographic and socioeconomic factors are related to sleep patterns. This study used nationally representative panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. A series of descriptive analyses were conducted to provide overall characteristics of the sample. Furthermore, mixed effect regression analysis techniques were employed to test the relationship between demographic and socioeconomic factors and sleep patterns. Paternal employment status was associated with adolescent sleep patterns, while maternal employment status was not. Adolescents with both parents working compared to adolescents with one parent or none working showed different sleep patterns on weekdays but not on weekends. Both parents possessing college degrees, household income, living in an urban area, and family type were associated with adolescent sleep pattern indicators to varying degrees. Some of these associations varied according to adolescent sex. This study provides insight into the impact of demographic and socioeconomic factors on weekend and weekday sleep patterns among adolescent students by sex. These findings provide information for the promotion of healthy sleep in adolescents by addressing demographic and socioeconomic factors
